DIY: Make your own paper Christmas balls

Want to do something creative yourself for the holidays? What could be more fun than homemade Christmas ornaments in the tree for an extra festive atmosphere in your home! With a little creativity and simple materials you can create your own decorations for your Christmas tree. I recently made these fun, colorful Christmas ornaments with old riso prints and you can also make them yourself, if you still have some cheerful old paper or old riso prints (that you made during the workshop!) lying around. With these Christmas ornaments you can influence which colors and which shapes you use, so it always looks nice in your interior!

Step 1: I made a printable for this project! Go to my webshop here. In my webshop you will find a free pdf file, with a template for the shapes of the hangers. You can download this and print it out with a regular A4 home printer. This way you can easily copy the shapes.

Step 2: Once you have printed the templates, cut out all the shapes you want to use. You can do this using scissors, or a knife and a cutting mat. The choice is yours! I personally prefer a knife to be able to work very precisely, but scissors are also fine. I have the luxury of a machine cutting plotter, but the shapes are easy to cut.

Step 3 : Place the cut out paper Christmas balls on the paper you want to use. Use the cut out shape as a template and draw a line around the shape with a pencil. Now you have exactly the right shape on the beautiful paper. You can then cut this out as well.

Step 4: Before we can connect the shapes, they need to be folded. To do this, make one fold in the middle of each shape. This ensures that the pendant will be nice and round! You don't need to fold some of the shapes, they are just flat. These are the shapes that only appear once on the template. Look carefully at the examples to know which ones you need to fold and which ones you don't.

Step 5: Place 3 of the same shapes on top of each other and make sure they are aligned well. We are going to make holes in the fold of the shape, so that we can easily go through it with the needle later. You can make these holes with an awl or a needle. The larger shapes can use 5 holes, the smaller ones have enough with 3.

Step 5: Once you have made the holes, you can easily attach the shapes to each other using a needle and thread. Try to pull the rope a little in between, so that the rope is tight. This prevents the shapes from being very loose.

Once they are attached to each other, it is useful to pull the rope tight on both sides one more time, then you can tie the ends together.

Step 6: When the shapes are firmly in place, you can unfold them all. This will give you a nice round pendant! If you want to add more shapes, you can attach them using a jewelry ring. To do this, make a hole in both shapes and thread the ring through them. You can get such rings at hobby shops such as Pipoos or SoLow.

And tadaaa, your homemade Christmas ornament is finished! Now you can hang it on your Christmas tree, or even make a cozy garland out of it.
