STUDIO MISPRINT:
RISO print STUDIO

Learn the magic of riso printing at Studio Misprint in the center of Utrecht.

Studio Misprint is a small, cheerful riso print studio in Utrecht. It was set up by Illustrator Ellis Tolsma to share the art of riso printing with others. You can follow workshops and courses here for a fun, creative afternoon. On this site you can also find collaborations and original, illustrative riso print work for in the home.

What is riso?

Riso print is a unique and sustainable printing technique from Japan, which allows you to create colorful, playful and graphic prints. The process uses a special printer, the riso printer, which looks like a large office printer, but works on the basis of stencils and vegetable ink.

The riso printer uses special 'ink drums' with bright, transparent colours that you can overlap to create new shades. The paper goes through the machine and is printed with one colour at each pass. So you have blue and yellow? Then the paper first goes through the blue riso drum and then through the yellow: creating magical green!

Because the process does not always align perfectly, each riso print gets a unique look. This makes it a nice quirky printing technique.

riso print workshops

Below you will find all the creative riso workshops and courses that I offer in my studio. In addition to learning riso printing, you will also learn illustration and collage techniques and you will be creative during the workshops for an afternoon. In the courses I will delve deeper into the technical side of riso printing, where you will get to know the machine even better. In addition to riso printing, you will also get to know new materials and discover creative and playful illustration techniques.

Who?

This riso print studio was founded by illustrator & designer

EllIS
TOLSMA

photoworkshops4.jpg

The riso print studio reflects Ellis' love for color and trying new things. In this studio she emphasizes experimenting and embracing the mistakes you make during the creative process. Everyone can be creative! The riso print workshops are accessible to everyone and also very suitable for people who are not used to making new, creative things. Riso print is the perfect medium for this, because the result is always a surprise!

The name Studio Misprint was conceived by Ellis' love for the riso process and the unexpected results it brings. Instead of getting frustrated with the 'wrong' prints, Ellis simply named her riso print studio 'Studio Misprint', as an ode to the imperfection of the riso printing process.
